Case Study: 1 Bligh Streetmark

Mark Curzon

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Thursday 9th May, Seminar Room

$25     Click here to purchase tickets

High-rise development within Sydney’s city has been subject to much political and public discourse over the years, which has driven building design and planning policy. In this presentation, the four critical considerations for 1 Bligh Street, Sydney: View, Public Space, Work Environment and Green Building, will be examined within this context. From the outset, Architectus and Ingenhoven Architects wanted to set a benchmark in design quality and sustainability for this tower.  This was endorsed by the commitment of the client DEXUS Property Group, DEXUS Wholesale Property Fund and CBUS Property.  Envisioned prior to the GFC as a 5 Star Green Star Premium Grade office tower, it was constructed during the GFC at a time when it would have been easy to reduce costs by diminishing the project detail and environmental agenda.  Benefiting from international and local design collaboration, Sydney now has a 6 Star Green Star Premium Grade, widely recognised building that is the recipient of multiple national and international awards.

Mark is a qualified British Architect and Urban Designer with extensive experience in design and documentation. Mark is a Property Council Grading Committee Member working within the commercial Sydney market assessing buildings and developing new standards with other industry professionals. He has been guest lecturer at the University of Sydney, UNSW and University of Newcastle and has presented at industry conferences locally and internationally on façade design, retrofitting for energy efficiency and sustainable design principles.

Concept of Life Cycle Thinkingrichard

Richard Rowe

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm Thursday 9th May, Seminar Room

$25     Click here to purchase tickets

When assessing the sustainability of building materials, buildings or suppliers it is important not to narrow your focus to a particular period in time as this may not provide the end result you intended.  The life cycle thinking concept endorses that what happens at each stage of an asset’s life matters, from beginning to end and everything in between. Richard Rowe steps through a life cycle example from procurement of raw materials, material manufacturing, building design, construction, occupancy and decommissioning.

Richard Rowe is the Sustainability Manager of a dedicated department at BlueScope Steel, focused on the sustainability of Australian manufactured products and Australian markets.  Richard also has experience in commercial market analytics, sales management, marketing, government relations (including carbon policy development) and environmental life cycle assessment (LCA).

Scott Clarkson

$25     Click here to purchase tickets

Rather than using solar energy solutions to cover yourself from rising electricity costs, it makes more sense to look at your energy use first, implement energy savings measures then tailor your solar energy solution to cover the balance. Scott Clarkson from CSR Building Products provides an insight into how energy efficiency can make your solar system more cost effective while covering more of your total electricity demand.

Scott Clarkson is a Civil Engineer with the unusual mix of qualifications in Marketing Management & Swim Teaching. Scott has worked as a designer & consultant in Supply Chain & Industrial Construction in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia & the UK. In 2007 Scott joined CSR Building Products in CSR’s Hebel business. When assessing the sustainability of building materials, buildings or suppliers it is important not to narrow your focus to a single metric as this may not provide the end result you intended.  Triple Bottom Line Sustainability encompasses environmental, social and economic metrics. Richard Rowe demonstrates how multiple sustainable metrics apply in sustainable development.
